- Information will be provided about Preplanning for Natural Burial at Heartwood Preserve (can take with you).

Talk & Tour: “Mosquito Control 101”

Guest Speaker: Jillian Meek
Pasco County Mosquito Control District
Our Guest Speaker for this Talk & Tour will be Jillian Meek, with the Pasco County Mosquito Control District. Jillian is the Public Education Specialist and has been with Pasco County Mosquito Control District (PCMCD) almost two years. She has a history of teaching and a background in marine science, with a love for animals, the ocean, and her family.
PCMCD services all residents and business within the boundaries of Pasco County. There are many different elements to mosquito control and PCMCD takes pride in keeping equipment in great shape, readily available and sometimes modified for optimum use. Jillian will give a quick introduction while showcasing some of the tools and vehicles that are used throughout the county. She’ll discuss the different roles, how they decide when and where to spray, as well as the importance of mosquito control. PCMCD aims to control mosquitoes in their immature stages to provide a comfortable outdoor environment for citizens and reduce the threat of disease that can be transmitted by mosquitoes.

The 4 trees highlighted in our Heartwood walk are described below:
Longleaf Pine – come see the stages of growth
Slash Pine – Learn why the Slash pine is named after the “slashes”
Cypress & Oak.
Learn how to identify these trees and what their roles are in Florida’s ecosystems.
Talk & Tour Series at Heartwood, 9:00 AM, Saturday 2/24/18, Topic: “Trees of Heartwood” ~ Come take a guided walk through the Preserve with Heartwood’s Founder & Executive Director Laura Starkey to learn about the different species of trees that live here: the keystone Longleaf Pine, Slash Pine, Cypress and Oaks.
– Free, all ages welcome, moderate walk/hike, bring water, wear closed-toe shoes, wear comfortable clothing.
