VOLUNTEER DAY: Heartwood’s Helpers

Want to be a Heartwood Helper?

Join Jonathan Sunday, May 16th at 9 AM to help with Heartwood’s BUTTERFLY GARDEN!

Volunteers needed to help revamp the Heartwood pollinator garden.

We will briefly discuss the ecological importance of native flowering plants to local pollinators with the hope that this helps inspire attendees to create their own pollinator friendly food sources.

We will provide coffee, a light breakfast and water, but please bring your own water bottle, sunscreen and/or bug spray if you need it.

Burial Crew Training Night

Heartwood Preserve’s Burial Crew is a group of very special people who assist with the natural burials that take place at Heartwood Preserve. This is a unique opportunity to help families have a meaningful closure to their loved one’s life.
The Burial Crew primarily helps to carry the deceased from the hearse (or other vehicle) to the grave, set the body over the grave, lower the body by hand (with ropes) into the grave, and finish closing the grave, after the family has participated as much as they want.
The Crew may also help with other needed tasks like directing parking, greeting, water, set-up & cleanup of burial area.

If this sounds like something YOU

may be interested in doing,

please join our current Crew & staff for our next

Training Night, Thursday, March 25 at 6 PM.

*Pizza & refreshments provided*

We will go over: safety, logistics, what to expect, payment, volunteering, “helpers”, dress code and practicing/training of lifting and lowering of the deceased.
Our Burial Crew represents not only Heartwood Preserve, but a new way of caring for our dead and for the land, that very few have had a chance to experience.

CANCELED: Talk & Tour: Tree Planting

CANCELED!

Our March Talk & Tour is all about planting trees.

This hands-on event will be led by Certified Arborist Joe Gross.

  • Learn how to properly plant and care for trees and shrubs.

  • Find out what a “root ball” is

  • Plant a tree or shrub in one of our designated planting areas

  • Learn why we don’t plant trees on the graves

Our “tree leader” for this talk is Mr. Joe Gross. Joe is a native Floridian and USF graduate (Criminology BA and MPA).

He has served in regulatory capacities for several jurisdictions within the Tampa Bay region and joined Hillsborough County in 2015.

He has been a Certified Arborist for over twenty years and is also a Master Naturalist and Master Gardener.

  • Good attire for planting: gardening gloves, light breathable clothing, sunscreen, insect repellent, sunhat, closed toed shoes
  • Bad attire for planting: sandals, opened-toe shoes, white sneakers, and basically any garment that is afraid to get dirty.
  • All tools needed to plant trees will be provided. However, if you have a shovel, please bring it.
  • Restrooms and water fountain are available. Snacks will be provided.
  • PETS: We love pets, but for their safety and the safety of others, please leave them at home when you are attending Talk & Tours.
*Bring a refillable water bottle

Saturday, March 28 at 9:00 a.m.
